EGYPT AND KENYA SIGN AN MOU TO BOOST SPACE COOPERATION

The Director General, Kenya Space Agency, Brigadier Hillary Kipkosgey, was welcomed by Professor Dr. Sherif Sedky, CEO of the Egyptian Space Agency on 27 January 2025 during an official visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt.

During the visit, the DG held discussions with EgSA Management led by CEO, Dr. Sedky on the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two agencies. The collaboration between the two agencies focuses on access to space-derived data, capacity building, and sharing space ground infrastructure. The DG expressed optimism on the implementation of the MOU which was  signed during the State Visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt by His Excellency the President, Dr. William Samoei Ruto from 29 to 30 January. Dr. Sedky on his part emphasized that "The visit represented an opportunity to integrate Kenyan and Egyptian expertise in support of the continent’s goals, particularly as Egypt hosts the permanent headquarters of the African Space Agency, which will serve as a platform for launching unified space initiatives."

Kenya and Egypt have ongoing space collaboration projects, including the development of the African Development Satellite(Af-Dev Sat), the ClimCam project under the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA0 Bartholomew programme and several capacity-building initiatives. The continued partnerships foster stronger diplomatic and economic ties, aligning with the African Space Strategy, which will strategically position Africa as a frontrunner in the space race.

The DG later proceeded for a tour of the EgSA’s centres and facilities. These included the Assembly, Integration and Testing Facility (AIT), the Space Mission Control Centre and the MisrSat-2 Satellite Image Reception Lab.
